Walking around the house this morning, I saw that half of the devices here thought it was 7:32AM, and the others thought that it was 8:32am. That’s right, we would have ended Daylight Savings Time earlier than this in years past, but since the rules changed we now have the Year 2007 Problem.
My home Linux servers all got it right, and therefore all devices that derive time from them did as well (such as the Slim boxes). Windows also got it. My Polycom IP phone thinks it’s an hour earlier. The microwave is wrong, as is the stove even though it’s new this year. The alarm system is hopeless — try updating the firmware on that! The VCRs are blinking from the last power outage, no longer needed in this era of Tivo and MythTV.
At least my blackberry is OK for now, I must have finally got that patch installed properly. Nothing worse than having all of our appointment alarms go off at the wrong time.
All this to support a controversial change, the wikipedia has an excellent article on DST, it’s origin, how it’s practised on other countries, and some of the controversy as to whether it does any good at all.
