Subtitle: Wordpress and other tech complaints
UPDATE — ok, not worthy of a blog post on it’s own, but I took a couple hours this morning, brought STJ up to 2.1.3, restored themes, etc. I think we’re back good to go.Â
Thanks to all of you who contacted me about Steve’s Tech Journal being off the air last week. I had just last month upgraded to Wordpress 2.1.2 after a spate of vulverabilities were discovered in prior versions. Then Doug got an advisory from an Ubuntu forum that 2.1.2 also had vulverabilities. So I took it down. Well, after a week of poking around and seeing no-one else act concerned about this and no word of it on the official Wordpress sources, I finally decided that the Ubuntu forum writer had confused his releases; and voila, we’re back. Grrrr. Now I go looking this morning for some links for this paragraph and I see 2.1.3 came out two days ago. Would have been nice to know this was coming, and to see some acknowledgement of the security issues. Get it together guys.
Speaking of tech gripes:
What is up with Skype? I can’t get a reliable presence indicator on many of my contacts. I’m constantly sending IM’s to people that aren’t there, or waiting for someone to come online only to find out when I finally send the a message that the little grey indicator instantly changes to green. And any calls I am making seem to either not go through with two way audio, or they get interrupted after 5 minutes (the former may be my problem tho from a combination of the Polycom Communicator and running Windows under VMware). Om posted about users backing off to pre 3.1 versions. And Andy tells me that the presence problem is a non-solveable problem given the p2p nature of the supernodes. Whatever the cause, it’s become unreliable enough that I have largely … stopped …. using …. it.
I’ve also been messing about with twitter, which I like because it lets you stay in touch with what’s going on in your friends lives. But. I switched to using IM as my primary interface, and I seem to be getting different messages than what I see when I go to twitter.com. Not a subset, but different. Maybe that was just a tempory glitch in last few days. In case you want to follow me, my twitter ID is ampersmith (but I’ll have to add you as a friend.)
