Last week the Italian news magazine L’Espresso had a great two page spread interviewing Jeff Pulver about video on the net. It’s part of their annual look ahead issue “Challenges for 2007″ and contains interviews with 15 or 20 visionaries including Steve Jobs, Vint Cerf, Robert Reich, and others. Not bad company and of course there’s the ever-hot Scarlett Johannson on the cover
Congratuations Jeff on this wonderful piece — L’Espresso is one of Italy’s top weekly news magazine (similar to Time and Newsweek here)
I have to say that the jouralist, Allesandro Longe, did an excellent job, the piece succinctly captures Jeff’s message and the trends that are going on in the internet video space. The piece is worthy of translation and reprint in US media, imho (and for which I do not have the capacity to do a proper job). If my fast-fading Italian from 2002 is up to the challenge, here’s how it starts:
Once in Italy there was only the TV of the State, then there were 20 years of duopoloy and now the troiki of RAI, MediaSet, and Sky. But the challenge of the future, for the small screen, is to also surpass this point. Now enter the era of ubiquitous TV: thousands of offerings to chose from on demand over the internet. …
The prophet of this development is Jeff Pulver, 44, American, and already well known in the world of telecommunications as the guru of VoIP, telephony over internet ….
For awhile, at various conventions that he participates in, Pulver has been explaining that the V in VoIP no longer stands for Voice, but for Video. It’s a way of saying that the the “true” new revolution, based at the heart of the internet, is video, the TV
And , for my Italian friends that might read this and check up on my translation … Amici miei, adesso sapete quanto basso e arrivato il mio Italiano. Dovreste venire a trovarmi e auitarmi praticare un po’. Si, questo e necessario. Questo e forse un po di vino rosso
Oh what fun to read about one of my favorite topics — the revolutionary power of VoIp in the sense of all the V’s … in Italian.
PS: I’ve not been able to find a link to the online article. If anyone can, please forward to me and I will update. O/w perhaps I will scan in the images of the text and post.
