The Penguin flys Song

Posted on Monday 7 November 2005

Today I flew Song from Boston to SFO. Song has individual entertainment systems at each seat, with integrated DirectTV, PPV Movies, games, flight info, Music, etc. While we were pushing back from the gate, the screen lit up and I watched the boot process. I started seeing scrolling text messages, so I paid closer attention. Sure looked like a Linux boot. After 10 seconds it was confirmed, I saw it mounting various *nix file systems. Then, the screen started switching to GUI mode and it displayed a Penguin in the upper left corner for 5 seconds before the full GUI came up. I couldn’t spot the distro though.

I’m not the only person to notice this.

I also noticed that the game menu had some classic Unix games like Bejeweled. It also had multi-player Texas Hold’em Poker, where you play against other travelers. I might have sprung the $5 bucks to do this, but there were only like 17 passengers on my 7am Sunday plane.
