FWD makes top 5

Posted on Monday 7 November 2005

I’m not sure why, but more and more national magazines are starting to show up in my mail (presumably for free unless some sneaky marketer has my credit card and is either charging it already or is planning to do so in the future).. I now regularly receive copies of Forbes, Time, Esquire, and a whole slew of unwanted tech things like Java Developers Journal, etc. . They go straight from the mail to the recycling pile. In fact, I applauded when my Post Office put large recycling bags in the lobby – I now can deposit these magazines before they’ve been in my possession for even 30 seconds. Makes you wonder about about what’s going on in mainstream media – and what their subscriber count really means these days — advertisers be warned.

However, I was kinda pleased when Computer Shopper inexplicably started showing up. It’s like porn for geeks. I often don’t have a chance to read it, but I carried it on the plane today – it’s their Top 100 issue, where they rate the best 5 in a whole number of categories. I saw that they rated VoIP providers and I was delighted to see that Free World Dialup is in the Top 5! Congratulations to Jeff, Jim, Stu, Rob and the whole Pulver crew!

In case you’re curious, here’s the top 5 in order

  1. Vonage
  2. Skype
  3. ATT Call Vantage
  4. Packet 8
  5. FWD

Here’s wht they say about FED

download FWD and you can make free calls over the Internet within minutes to other FWD users and other Internet phone networks. All you need is a mic and speakers.

This reminds me that I really need to finish up my Asterisk config. I can make outbound fwd calls by dialing prefix 7, but for some reason inbound calls to my FWD number don’t reach me even though he SIP registration succeeds ….

This must be an US only ranking, I cannot imagine Skype below Vonage worldwide
