Self reference via Google

Posted on Sunday 31 July 2005

So I sat down this afternoon, to tune up a problem I have with my Xten Lite softphone working with my new config. It makes internal calls fine, and but when it switches externally via Broadvoice, the RTP doesn’t start up. I get a 400 Bad error back from Broadvoice. However, this config works fine for my Grandstream phone. I think it’s a codec mismatch, or perhaps handling of DTMF.

Google to the rescue, my choice of search terms was “xten lite broadvoice”, query here. Worked my way through page 1, nothing there. In page 2, I find a promising entry, only to look at the URL, it says “Steve’s Tech Journal”.

Hey, wait a minute, that’s me!!

Sure enough, my entry from a couple weeks ago is #17 overall in the list of these terms.

Hmmm, I wonder if I contact myself then I could solve my problem?

Update 1 - Kellan just wrote that my original article is linked on O’Reilly (no permalink), by nat. He/she says:

Great strategy for reducing your dependence on mobile operators and giving you a whole range of new options for managing your voice communications….

Cool - thanks nat

Update 2 - I did resolve my Xten lite problem, btw, I had to restrict codec choices to only accept g7.11, in my Asterisk settings for the softphone. Otherwise Broadvoice was looking at the possible choices and returning a 400 Bad. I think this is an error on Broadvoice’s part, they could have just selected the codec they wanted to use.

Nat (aka Gnat) is Nat Torkington, Perl hacker, author and O’Reilly conference planner extrodinaire.

Also I tend to find myself about 50-75% of the time when I search. Nothing that this can’t not due to the high quality of the information I’m providing I’ve developed a theory of “linguistic convergence” to try to explain it.
