I’m packing this morning getting ready to fly to London tonight for some meetings, then onto VoN Europe in Stockholm next week. There’s a great lineup of speakers at VoN and I’m looking forward to getting the European perspective on IP Communications. There’s also some activity with the Global IP Alliance that I will report on.
I’ve carefully booked all hotels with broadband and/or wifi, the show itself will have wifi, as will all public transport stations in Stockholm thanks to The Cloud, a Swedish ISP. So I should be well connected and I hope to post frequently.
I was just hunting for my Targus air power unit, after seeing a flurry of recent blog postings about broadband services in the air. I’m on BA, I don’t think they have such a service yet, but if they do you’ll be the first to know. Here’s Jeff having fun with blogging from SAS. Brough used Lufthansa’s service last week. As always there’s a double edge sword to these things — I remember when I first started carrying a laptop on business trips circa 1993. I got a lot more done, but I spent less time having dinner with people and going with colleagues to an occasional movie, show, ballgame, or night at a bar throwing darts. It’s hard to quantify the loss of this socialization vs. the productivity gains, but I have a vague suspicion that we’ve all lost more than we realize in the last 20 years. Sometime back then I wrote an email about this, it would be fun to find it — I’ll go looking and if I find it I’ll post it.
I’ve been meaning to write a few essays lately, but I’ve just gotten too busy with my clients and a search committee assignment at a nonprofit I am involved with. It’s also the time of year for spring cleanup — turning the garden beds, opening the pool, moving out the outdoor and porch furniture, etc. These things are mostly done and life should calm down after this European trip, and maybe then I can complete my thoughts.
Essays I’ve been developing:
- 911 is a very hot topic, and there’s been lots of discussion of the impact of the FCC ruling on the particular industry of residential VoIP providers. I’d like to go way higher up and explore the big picture global societal goals of emergency services, talk about how different technologies can enable this, and generally explore the root issue. Not that I’m in any way qualified to do this, but I think it would be fun, so I’m going to try.
- The guys at Skype Journal are asking “What’s your Skype Strategy?”, and saying that your business should have one. Unless someone does it first, I’m planning to write what I think the “Skype Strategy” should be for one of the biggest businesses in the world, the United States of America.
- Why cold fusion and wireless mesh are perhaps the two most critical building blocks for a future utopia of plenty. Again, topics far afield from what I am knowledgeable about, but hey, it’s my blog and I get to write my musings as well as my focused comments.
